Child Nutrition Bill Clears Ed & Labor Committee

Dear Partners,

Last Thursday, the House Committee on Education and Labor passed out of committee its child nutrition reauthorization bill, the Improving Nutrition for America's Children Act of 2010 (H.R. 5504). This bill requests $8 billion over ten years to implement a number of reforms aimed at improving and expanding the national child nutrition programs. The bill passed by a 32-13 margin, with all three of New England's committee members-John Tierney (MA), Joe Courtney (CT), and Carol Shea-Porter (NH)-voting in favor of the bill. The vote was also bipartisan, with three Republican members voting for the bill: Todd Platts (PA), Michael Castle (DE), and Vernon Ehlers (MI).

The next step is for the full House and Senate to debate each of their bills on the floor. As a reminder, the current authorization expires on September 30, 2010.

We are deeply appreciative of the time and effort you have put into this important issue and will be in touch soon with further action steps. As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Amy Rosenthal
Project Director
