Include CHGME in the President's Budget

January 24, 2012

Dear Partners,

As you know, Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education Payment Program (CHGME) ensures that children have access to the providers they need by allowing independent children’s hospitals to receive federal support to train resident pediatricians and pediatric specialists similar to the GME support provided to adult hospitals.

The program has been a clear success over the years and has resulted in an increased number of pediatric residents and pediatric resident specialists across the country. For more information on the successful track record of CHGME and opportunities to make the program even more successful in the future, please see our paper on the issue by clicking here.

Federal funding for the program has been continued through the end of the current federal fiscal year but a long term reauthorization is still stalled in Congress. Last year the President proposed eliminating funding for CHGME in his FY12 budget. We want your help to ensure that he includes funding for CHGME in his upcoming FY13 budget. Inclusion in the President's budget will better position the program to receive full authorization from Congress.

Action Step

Please utilize this form from the National Association of Children's Hopstials and Related Institutions (NACHRI) to contact President Obama and let him know that you support full funding for the CHGME program.
